“The Fortunate Geese” – Handcrafted Shiwan Ceramic Sculpture, “Noble Companions,” National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Pair of Male & Female (Made-to-Order, All Taxes & Shipping Included)
Product Description
Welcome to Qilin ArtX, where the ancient ceramic art of Shiwan brings to life a pair of graceful geese—a mated pair, forever side by side, carrying wishes of fidelity, nobility, and good fortune into your home.
A Pair of Noble Companions
In Chinese tradition, the goose is a symbol of purity, loyalty, and elegance. The male goose, with his proud bearing and larger stature, represents strength and protection; the female, slightly smaller but equally graceful, embodies gentleness and devotion. Together, they form a perfect union—a metaphor for faithful partnership, harmonious family life, and shared prosperity. This pair of Shiwan ceramic sculptures captures that spirit. The male goose stands tall (49 cm in height), his neck arched, his beak slightly open as if calling to his mate. The female goose (48 cm) echoes his posture, her form slightly more slender, her gaze turned toward him. They are inseparable—a living wish for a bond that endures. As the ancient poet Luo Binwang wrote in the Tang dynasty: “O goose, goose, goose! / With neck curved, singing to the sky.”
The Art of Shiwan Ceramics – A National Treasure
These sculptures are crafted in Shiwan, Foshan, Guangdong—a town renowned for its ceramic art for over five centuries. Shiwan pottery (石湾公仔) was inscribed on China’s first list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006. Unlike porcelain, which pursues flawless gloss, Shiwan ware celebrates the raw beauty of clay. The artists leave parts of the body unglazed, allowing the warm, earthy “bone” of the fired clay to show through, creating an effect that is “more warm and human than porcelain.” Each piece is handmade, shaped by skilled artisans, then fired at 1250°C. The glaze is thick, lustrous, and subtly variegated, giving the geese a sense of living softness.
Handcrafted Details & Authentic Materials
Ceramic Body: High‑temperature stoneware, fired to 1250°C for durability and a rich, resonant tone.
Shiwan Glaze: A signature, slightly runny glaze that pools in the crevices, highlighting the texture of feathers and the curve of necks.
Unglazed “Bone”: The geese’s beaks and eyes are often left in bare clay, revealing the warm, reddish‑brown body beneath—a hallmark of Shiwan artistry.
Hand‑Sculpted: Every curve, every feather, every subtle turn of the head is shaped by hand, making each pair unique.
Size & Presence – A Mated Pair
| Gender | Height | Width | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male (Gander) | 19.3 inches (49 cm) | 18.5 inches (47 cm) | 13.8 inches (35 cm) |
| Female (Goose) | 18.9 inches (48 cm) | 18.1 inches (46 cm) | 14.2 inches (36 cm) |
Their scale makes them ideal as a focal point in an entryway, living room, garden, or poolside. Place them facing each other or side by side—they always seem to be in conversation.
A Note on Craftsmanship
Each piece is handmade in Shiwan using traditional methods passed down through generations. Minor variations in glaze, size, or clay texture are not flaws but the unique signature of the artisan’s hand, a testament to the piece’s authentic, handcrafted nature.
