For these tea sets, artisans start with high‑grade Dehua clay, shape each piece by hand, then apply intricate hand‑painted motifs in iron‑oxide underglaze – dragons, phoenixes, fish, and mythical birds. A second firing at 1300°C seals the design. Finally, the interior is coated with genuine gold using the ancient Chinese gilding technique (鎏金) – a process of mixing gold with mercury, applying it to the fired ceramic, then heating until the mercury evaporates, leaving a pure gold layer that is polished to a brilliant, food‑safe shine.
