Product Description
Welcome to Qilin ArtX, where the boundless compassion of the bodhisattva is rendered in enduring brass—a figure who sits neither in meditation nor in formal devotion, but in the quiet ease of one who has found freedom within.
The One Who Sees Freely
Her name is Guanshiyin, “The One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World.” But here, she is called Guān Zì Zài (观自在) —“The One Who Sees Freely.” It is a name that speaks not to her power over the world, but to her freedom within it. This sculpture captures that freedom in the very posture of the figure. She does not sit in the formal lotus position, nor does she stand in rigid devotion. Instead, she rests in royal ease (lalitasana) , her right knee raised, her left leg folded beneath her, her weight settled into a posture that is neither rigid nor casual—simply at ease. Her head is slightly bowed, her eyes lowered in quiet contemplation. A faint smile plays at the corners of her lips—not the smile of worldly pleasure, but the subtle, almost imperceptible smile of one who has seen through the illusions of the world. This is a Guanyin stripped of the formal trappings of religious iconography, yet more deeply spiritual for it. She is human enough to feel, divine enough to be free.
Handcrafted Details & Authentic Materials – The Lost-Wax Method
This piece is a masterwork of sculptural grace and foundry artistry, created using the traditional lost-wax casting method, a process that allows for the capture of the finest textures and forms.
Solid Brass Construction: Cast from high-quality solid brass, the sculpture possesses a substantial weight (2.6 kg / 5.7 lbs) that speaks to its quality and permanence. The surface is finished with a warm, natural patina that gives the figure a gentle luminosity, as if touched by the light of dawn.
The Face of Compassion: The face is rendered with extraordinary sensitivity. The features are delicate, the brow smooth, the eyes lowered in a gaze that seems to see inward rather than outward. The lips are full, the corners turned in the faintest suggestion of a smile—an expression that has been called the “Guanyin smile,” a sign of the peace that comes from perfect understanding.
The Crown of Devotion: Upon her head rests an elaborate crown (宝冠) , intricately carved, with a small seated Buddha (化佛) at its center—a reminder that compassion and wisdom are one.
The Flowing Robes: Her garments are sculpted with the fluid grace of silk. The upper robe (祖胸广袖上衣) falls in deep, natural folds, the sash flowing, the skirt (裙) cascading in layers that seem to move with a life of their own. The carving of the fabric is so precise that it appears soft to the touch.
The Posture of Freedom: Her right leg is raised, her right arm resting upon it in a gesture of ease; her left leg is folded beneath her, her left hand resting gently. The composition is stable yet dynamic, a study in the balance between stillness and movement.
A Note on Craftsmanship
Each piece is handcrafted using the lost-wax method, a meticulous process involving multiple stages of casting, polishing, and patination. The fluid drapery of the robes and the subtle expression of the face require hours of precision work. Minor variations in texture, patina, or finish are not flaws but the unique signature of the artisan’s hand, a testament to the piece’s authentic, handcrafted nature.
